The Atelier at Flowerfield is pleased to announce our 2nd installment of our youth program, "Museums on the Go", sponsored by The John C Dunphy Foundation.
This year, six Long Island Museums will be presenting fun and interactive workshops for 6-12 year olds, which will be followed by art lessons based on that workshop's theme.

Discover the stories that quilts told in the days of the Underground Railroad to assist runaway slaves on their journey to freedom. Learn to “read” various quilt codes; then use mathematical patterns and fabric shapes to design a quilt that tells your very own personal story.

Explore the fascinating lives of 19th century whalers and the importance of whaling in American history, especially on Long Island.
Learn the how, why, and when of whale hunting, touch authentic nautical artifacts used on whaling ships, and understand the need for whale conservation today.
Students carve scrimshaw art on keepsake boxes.

Presenter: The New York Marine Rescue Center
Discussions about sea turtle species in New York water and the threats they face – this includes cold stunning, fishery interactions (entanglements, ingestion of marine debris), boating accidents, climate change, and more.
Learn what the rehab process looks like for these sea turtles and when they get released!

Presenter: The Long Island Science Center
Students will have the opportunity to examine and compare a variety of real animal bones, using calipers to measure each bone and create a bar chart they can keep and use to identify animal bones outdoors.

Beginning on Earth, students will travel across the solar system, learning about the planets and other celestial bodies that call the night sky home.

Presenter: The Cradle of Aviation Museum
There are many things one needs to know before venturing up into space...like how does one survive? The most common and practical questions will be answered on what life is like in space. Students will discover where to sleep, what kind of food is available, what astronauts wear, and how they go to the bathroom.

Presenter: The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum
Learn about these incredible marine mammals and discover how they inspired the legend of the mermaid!
Explore mermaid myths from around the world and design a colorful seashell necklace or keychain to keep.
