DISCLAIMER: All classes require a minimum of 3 students per class per session unless a higher minimum is required by an individual instructor. Any class that does not meet the 3 person minimum, 2 business days before the start of the new session will be canceled. Calls and emails are made to any enrolled students in classes that have not met registration minimums to ensure student satisfaction.
The Atelier does NOT supply materials for our classes unless otherwise stated or previously arranged with staff or instructors. Please be sure to check the material list, available upon class registration or under your class description, for information on what to bring to class.

Price: $260 / 4 week session
This class is ideal for anyone who has ever wanted to try the pastel medium or for more advanced pastel artists. Methods to capture mood, atmospheric perspectives, simultaneous contrast and mark making will be covered. Classes will include a short introduction about pastels and materials, followed by demonstrations of still life or landscape subject that includes doing an underpainting. Individual instruction at your easel.

Students will begin the class with the selection of a scene considering composition and aspect. A detailed discussion regarding paint mixtures and values leads the student into the painting process. In true atelier fashion, helpful suggestions follow the painting process to a successful conclusion.

If you have always wanted to try watercolor but didn’t know how to start, this class will help you get over your fear of this tricky medium. I will teach you all the foundations, from which materials to use and basic techniques. You will learn how to mix colors, to apply wet into wet washes and apply the techniques so you can paint from a reference photo.

This class introduces students to the basic concepts, materials and methods of painting. Students are guided through a series of foundational exercises that hone their observing and painting skills each week. Assignments focus on different topics through a variety of exercises that explore the unique properties of oil paints,( applied color theory, perspective, chiaroscuro, etc.) designed to develop the student's painting proficiency. This class is tailored to beginners, as well as seasoned artists, seeking a comfortable but challenging setting to elevate their skillset and to explore the beauty and endless possibilities
of painting.

Oil painting is visual art’s most celebrated medium. To many artists, oil painting can seem complex and daunting. This course aims to demystify oil painting through a variety of time-tested exercises that explore the unique properties of oil paints, applied color theory, and independent painting projects via observation and/or imagination. Various classical and historic painting methods and approaches will be demonstrated.

This class is structured to help the intermediate student to understand the medium of watercolor. We will be exploring landscaping painting, still life and portrait painting in various styles, spontaneous and rendered. The instructor will demonstrate: masking, brush control techniques, wet into wet and dry brushing techniques. Composition will be stressed in this class to focus the student on creating dynamic well thought out watercolor paintings!

Working from a live model (mirror or photographs for online students) students learn to draw and paint portraits in the academic tradition. Building upon principles which were established in plaster cast drawing and painting, great emphasis is placed on accuracy of shapes, mixing flesh tones, and capturing the sitter's personality.

The class will focus on painting in all mediums: oil, acrylic, graphite & charcoal. The students will have the opportunity to paint Still Life, Landscape, portrait and cast drawing. From the application of rich impastos to the scraping down with a palette knife, from charcoal studies to color harmonies, this course is designed to welcome the beginner painter, and to engage the advanced painter.
Students may work from photographs or life and will explore different techniques of drawing and painting.

This class is designed for the student new to figure drawing. They will be introduced to the same basic methods and techniques used by the Renaissance masters to draw from the live model (long pose). They will learn to observe, organize and apply sound drawing principles to create figure drawings from beginning to end. Instructor demos, anatomy and exploring master figure drawings are included in the course. Ultimately, the student will shed their apprehension, gain confidence and build an effective skillset for taking on one of the most complex and beautiful exercises in classical art.

Day & Time: Fridays 10:00am - 1:00pm, In-studio
Price: $260 / 4 week session
This class will take you through the steps of creating a successful plein air painting. The beginning stages, consisting of preliminary sketches and blocking in, will be discussed and practiced, as will elements further into the painting process: color harmony, value and atmospheric perspective. Teaching will be strongly one on one, as you paint your choice of scenery in various Long Island locations. Instructor demonstrations will be incorporated during classes, though emphasis will be on student painting time. On rainy days, class will be held indoors at the Atelier, using photos that you bring or those provided to you. A variety of ability levels are welcomed, as long as the materials list is given adequate attention.

In this course students will work on creating graphic novel pages based off a story of their choice using the principles learned in class.
Through completing the assigned tasks students will gain a better understanding of what it takes to be a professional artist working on entertainment design and comics.
The lessons are designed to be fun, and aid and facilitate the acquisition of new skills.

Similar to our Foundational Drawing & Painting, in drawing foundations students are introduced to the basic concepts, materials, and methods of drawing. This class is tailored towards beginners.

Guardian consent required for those 18 and under.
3-hour session, 6pm to 9pm. Open to students and non-students, in studio.
Each session will have one long pose for those attending to create from.
Please be advised, while we try to have the same model for each multi-week session, it is not always possible.

PAYMENTS
• Payment must be made in full before each session starts.
• Please call the office as soon as possible If you are enrolled in a session but cannot attend due to extenuating circumstances. Once the session has started, no credits or refunds will be provided. (See cancellations for more information.)
FINANCIAL AID
• The Atelier has a limited amount of financial aid if needed. Please call the office staff to make arrangements.
CANCELLATIONS
• If the Atelier cancels a class (due to inclement weather), a make-up class will be scheduled. If a student cannot attend the make-up class, a credit or refund will be issued.
• If an instructor cancels a class, credits will be given unless the instructor arranges for a substitute.
• There must be a minimum of three (3) students registered for a class two business days prior to the first session or the class will be cancelled. Any student enrolled will be notified.
STUDIO/CLASSROOM PROTOCOLS
• The studios are opened a half hour before each class so the students can set up.
• Unless permitted by the instructor or staff, students should finish working by the end of class, clean up and break down still-life set-ups within half an hour after class.
• Students are encouraged to take photographs of their set-ups so the work can be reassembled for the next class.
• Students are expected to bring home their work when finished/dry. The Atelier has limited storage space.
INSTRUCTORS
• It is the instructor’s responsibility to see to it that the studios are left in an orderly state after a class and ready for use by the next class.
• The instructor is responsible for ensuring all doors are locked and alarms are set after each class.
A rigorous apprenticeship program designed for artists seeking professional level skills.
This program is an opportunity for students, regardless of age, who are in need of financial aid in order to continue pursuing their studies at The Atelier at Flowerfield.
